Joseph H. Silvestri Sr.

Joseph H. Silvestri Sr. of Downingtown Joseph H. Silvestri, Sr., 88, of Downingtown, passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2013, at his home. He was the loving husband of the late Grace Messina Silvestri, with whom he had shared 34 years of marriage at the time of her passing. Born in West Chester, he was the son of the late Benito, Sr. and Dora Porta Silvestri. He was a 1942 graduate of West Chester High School. Mr. Silvestri proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII, earning the rank of Radarman 3rd Class, and was awarded the Pacific Theater Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. Mr. Silvestri worked for his father who owned the Silvestri Grocery Store in West Chester. He took over for his father and ran the store until 1958. He then was employed by Pepperidge Farm Frozen Foods as a distribution leader for 32 years, retiring in 1990. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, and a former life member of the Italian Social Club of West Chester. In his spare time, he enjoyed bowling and gardening. In addition, Joe was an accomplished singer /songwriter, and sang with big bands during the 1940's. He also sang at weddings, banquets and for special occasions and events. He is survived by his son, Joseph H. Silvestri, Jr. and wife, Kathleen, of Downingtown, and daughter, Deanna Logan and husband, Samuel, of Bluffton, S.C. He is also survived by his brother, Philip Silvestri of Springfield, Ohio; grandchildren, Christopher Silvestri and wife, Meggin, Christina Fleming and husband, Joseph, and Joshua Grab; and great-grandchildren, Eric, Madelynn, Joseph, Logan, Jack and Lucas. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28th at St. Joseph Church, 338 Manor Ave., Downingtown, where family and friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Neighborhood Hospice of West Chester, 400 E. Marshall Street, West Chester, PA 19380.
