Mafalda de Napoli de Valperosa Smith, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania Mafalda de Napoli de Valperosa Smith, age 88, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania passed away Wednesday evening, September 11, 2013 at The Glen at Willow Valley, her daughter Alexandra at her side. Born in Ixelles, Belgium, daughter of Melchior and Irma (Froumy) de Napoli de Valperosa, she immigrated to the United States in the 1930's and became a US citizen in 1953. She married the late Elbridge Milton Smith in 1958 in Bronxville, N.Y.. They later lived in Evanston Illinois, Shaker Heights, Ohio and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania before moving to West Chester in 1969. Mafalda moved to Willow Valley,Lancaster Pa. in 2005. The family wishes to thank the caring and compassionate nurses and staff at Meadow Ridge and The Glen at Willow Valley. She was the Dear Mother of Elbridge M. Smith Jr. of Spring Hill, Florida, Mia (Steve) McLelland of Crossville, Tennessee and Alexandra (Don) Draper of West Chester, Pennsylvania and the Beloved Grandmother of Graham & Isabella of West Chester, Pa. and Samuel & Eliza of Spring Hill, Fla. Raised in Belgium and Westchester County New York, Mafalda attended the Ursuline School of New Rochelle N.Y., Fordham University N.Y. and The American Institute of Fine Arts N.Y. Before marrying Elbridge Smith, Mafalda worked for the Belgian Government, Sabena Belgian Airlines and Sullivan Stauffer, Collwell & Bayles Advertising Agency, and was a member of the Bronxville League for Service. From 1979 to 1986, Mafalda worked in the Prothonotary's Office in the Chester County Courthouse. While raising a family, she served on the Executive Council of the Chester County branch of the American Heart Association, was a member of the board of the Freedom Valley Girl Scout Council, Valley Forge Pa, and served as Recording Secretary and Chairman administering the Sylvia Farny Scholarship for the Philadelphia Section of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Mafalda later volunteered for the Sugartown Horse Show and Friends of the Chester County Library. Active in the local and state politics for the Republican Party, Mafalda corresponded with former President George HW Bush before he was in office. An avid bridge player, Mafalda played for many years with a neighborhood group in Caswallen. Well-traveled, Mafalda visited more than 15 countries, many while cruising the Caribbean and Latin America. Mafalda also enjoyed painting, reading, crossword puzzles and playing Scrabble with her grandchildren. A lifelong Roman Catholic, Mafalda was a long time member of St. Agnes, West Chester Pa. and St. Mary's, Lancaster Pa., and attended mass and a cancer support group at Daylesford Abbey, Paoli Pa.
