Ramsay Sommerville Buchanan of Coatesville Ramsay Sommerville Buchanan passed away on November 20, 2012. Born February 11, 1926 in Wayne, Pa., he was the son of the late Joseph C. Buchanan and Betty S. Buchanan. He is survived by his wife Susie S. Buchanan with whom he shared 49 years of marriage and his younger son, Richard and his wife Cindy, two granddaughters Audrey and Maggie, his brother Andrew Buchanan of Radnor, Pa. and sister Betty Williams of Pittsburgh, Pa. His elder son John died September 7th, 2002. He attended Radnor High School and graduated from Phoenixville High School in 1944. At age 18 he was a combat infantryman in Europe in the 94th Division, 3rd Army in the clean up of the Battle of the Bulge. Later he served as an officer in the Army Veterinary Corps reserves. He received a B.S. degree from Penn State and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania in 1954. His work with monkeys for polio vaccine research at Merck Sharpe and Dohme took him on safari to Ethiopia, where he was waylaid for several months by the '58 coup d'etat, and to the Philippines. He became a partner in the King of Prussia Veterinary Hospital with Dr. John Church in 1961 where he practiced small animal medicine until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Assoc. (AVMA), the Penna. VMA and past pres- ident of the Suburban VMA. He served in the 1970's for eight years as a supervis-or in Schuykill Township working with land preservation efforts and early forms of municipal zoning. A life long horseman and fox hunter, he took great pleasure in working with hounds with Mrs. John B. Hannum, MFH and was priveleged to be an honorary whipper-in for five years and then served as field master for hound exercising for four summers. He had previously hunted with the Whiteland Hunt and then with the Pickering Hunt where he was the field master for five years and a member of the Pickering Hunt Board. He was president and treasurer of the Buck and Doe Trust Board in the course of nine years. A memorial service will be held at Mercer Hill Farm, 1220 Doe Run Road, Coatesville, Pa. on November 29th, 2012 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cheshire Hunt Conservancy Land Preservation Fund, P.O.
