Richard 'Dick' James Nystrom of Downingtown Richard "Dick" James Nystrom, 81, of Downingtown, passed away in his home on Friday, Dec. 27, 2013. Dick was born on Feb. 28, 1932, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Albert Nystrom and Mary Salzer Nystrom. Dick graduated from the University of Missouri in 1953, during which time he pledged and was initiated into Alpha Tau Omega, and remained a lifelong supporting alumnus. Dick enjoyed a 32-year career with General Motors
, retiring in 1987. Later in life Dick moved to Pennsylvania so that he could be near his grandchildren. Dick was always hospitable, welcoming, while equally reclusive and reserved. He was devoted to his career and his role as a father. Dick was a veracious reader, and reading was actually his preferred pastime. He enjoyed leisured stays on the California Coast. Dick is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Nystrom Heerding, and Karin Nystrom; his son-in-law, Dirk Heerding; his two grandchildren, his brother, Robert "Bob" Nystrom. He was preceded in death by Roberta "Kay" Nystrom. Per Dick's wishes, there were no formal services. On Jan. 11, 2014 his remains were scattered off Dana Point Harbor, Calif., a favorite coastal place. Dick was loved by many but known by few, and will be dearly missed.
