Rev. Alphonse T. Mascherino of Somerset Reverend Alphonse T. Mascherino, 69, of Somerset, passed on Feb. 15, 2013 at the In Touch Hospice House, after a lengthy struggle with cancer. Born June 4, 1943, in West Chester, he was the son of the late Dominick and Emily (Fiore) Mascherino. Ordained a Catholic priest in 1976 in the Archdiocese of Altoona /Johnstown, Alphonse served in several dioceses in Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Florida, California, and Delaware. His ministries included hospital chaplain, evangelical communications/broadcasting, and pastoral ministries. Alphonse founded the Flight 93 Memorial Chapel in Shanksville two months following the September 11, 2001 attacks and served as director of the Chapel for 12 years before retiring this month due to health concerns. The Chapel was established to honor the passengers and crew of Flight 93 and all innocent people who died in the terrorist attacks. Surviving family members include sisters, Mary Jean Manion and husband, Thomas, of Alamogorda, N.M. and Genevieve Burghardt of Long Island, N.Y.; and brothers, James Mascherino and wife, Marie, and Fred Mascherino and wife, Gail, of West Chester, Joseph Mascherino and wife, Joan, and Andrew Mascherino and wife, Kathy, of Downingtown, and Louis Mascherino and wife, Sharon, and Dominick Mascherino of Coatesville. He also leaves behind aunts, Laura Reutter and Antoinette Morris of Downingtown, and Frances Alesiani of West Chester, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends, including dear friends, Don and Kay Kemp of Salisbury. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Frances Cosgrove and Philomena (Mena) Hoopes, and their spouses. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 22nd at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, 338 Manor Ave., Downingtown. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, at the James J. Terry Funeral Home, 736 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown, and also from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Downingtown.
