Andrew 'Andy' Demchak of Thorndale Andrew "Andy" Demchak, 90, died Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at Coatesville VA Medical Center Garden of Grace Hospice Unit. Andy celebrated his 90th birthday in December with a luncheon for family, friends and neighbors. Andy was the husband of Lois Elieen Young Demchak with whom he shared 60 years of marriage. Born in Osceola Mills, he was the son of the late Michael and Amelia Buckeye Demchak. He was a 1942 graduate of Osceola Mills High School. In 1943, Andy joined the U.S. Army and then transferred to the Army Air Corp, 95th Bomb Group, 336th Squadron as an aerial gunner. His B-17 was shot down over Frankfurt, Germany. Andy was taken prisoner and liberated in 1945 with the rank of Staff Sargent. He was the last of the ten crew members. In 2007, Andy had the pleasure of reuniting with his pilot and Theo Dillenberger from Weisel, Germany who grew up in the area where the plane crashed. Andy was a member of St. Cecilia Church until its closing and was presently a member of St. Joseph Church, Coatesville. Andy was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 845, a life member of the Polish American Club and a member of the Old Caln Historical Society. Andy worked for Collins and Aikman and in 1986 retired from Columbia Gas Corp after 23 years of service. In addition to his wife, Lois, Andy is survived by his daughter Karen Ficca and her husband Tom of Coatesville and his son Jim Demchak and his wife Jessica of Coatesville; 3 grandchildren: Kristen Sabatino and her husband Tom, Matt Ficca, and Ivan Andrew Demchak; one sister Dorothy Slotter of New Jersey; a special god-daughter, Cheryl Nettles and her husband Robert of Florida and other nephews; and his two granddogs Patton & Tugger. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his five sisters and three brothers. Andy's funeral mass will be celebrated at 12 noon, Saturday, July 26th, at St. Cecilia Church 6th Avenue and East Chestnut Streets, Coatesville. Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 25th, at Wentz Funeral Home 342 East Chestnut Street, Coatesville and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 26th. Interment will be in St. Cecilia Cemetery. Memorials in Andy's honor may be made to Pope John Paul II Regional Elementary School 2875 Manor Road, West Brandywine, PA 19320; or to Coatesville VA Medical Center Hospice & Palliative Care Program Voluntary Services, 1400 Blackhorse Hill Road, Coatesville, PA 19320.
