Barbara E. Reis Obituary
Barbara E. Reis of West Chester Barbara E. Reis (nee Reaser) of West Chester, died on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013. She peacefully passed away at Wellington Terrace with her daughter by her side. She was a devoted wife of the late Russell E. Reis Jr., and a loving mother of Rebecca of Melrose, Mass. and the late Jennifer. Born in Easton, Pa. on Feb. 25, 1937, she was the daughter of Layton Ernest and Esther (Hobbs) Reaser. She graduated from Wilson High School in 1955. She then attended West Chester State Teachers College and graduated in 1959 with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. Upon graduation, she established and taught the kindergarten program at Bethlehem Township Elementary School in Bethlehem, Pa. In 1960, she moved to West Chester and established the kindergarten program at East Whiteland Elementary School (now Kathryn Markley Elementary School). Barbara continued her dedication to early childhood education by founding Calvary Lutheran Preschool in 1971. She served as Director and teacher for 39 years. During her tenure, the school grew from 14 to more than 100 students. Throughout her teaching career, Barbara laid the foundation for a love of learning and cultivated the intellectual, creative, and social well being of countless children. Barbara had a tremendous love of people and was blessed with many friends. She and her husband were gifted in the art of bringing people together and the life they shared was full of picnics, parties, and social gatherings. She loved watching birds, arranging flowers, reading stories, and baking wonderful treats for her grandchildren. Barbara's greatest joy in life was spending time with her three grandchildren; Jakob, Jennifer, and Anna, who affectionately called her "Gran". In addition to her daughter and grandchildren, Barbara is survived by 13 nieces and nephews and many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, followed by a Memorial Service at 3 p.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church, 730 S. New Street, West Chester, PA 19382. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Barbara's honor to the Calvary Lutheran Preschool Scholarship Fund, 730 S. New Street, West Chester, PA 19382.
