Gene Edwin Ellis of West Brandywine Gene Edwin Ellis, 86, passed away on Oct. 5, 2013 at his home in West Brandywine. He was born on Oct. 2, 1927 in Rising Sun, Iowa to Lloyd and Mabel (Van Horn) Ellis. Gene grew up in Des Moines, Iowa and graduated from East High School in 1944. After high school he joined the Army in 1944 and served for 2 years in the U.S. Army in Japan. He graduated in 1950 from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he received a degree in civil engineering with honors. After graduation, he went to work for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Railway Maintenance of Way and after 42 years in railroading with the PRR, Penn Central, ConRail and Amtrak. He retired in 1992 as Assistant Vice President and Chief Engineer from Amtrak, duties for which included the Northeast Corridor High Speed Rail Project. Gene married Marjorie Lois Johnson in 1948 in Des Moines, Iowa. They were happily married for 65 years. Gene was a member of Goshen Baptist Church. He lived his life with a quiet passion and was devoted to his faith and family. He enjoyed travel, the company of life-long friends, golf, and sports and loved to watch the Chicago Cubs and all of the teams from the University of Michigan Wolverines. He was a member of the Railroader's Honor Roll at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg. Gene was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Duane. Gene is survived by his spouse, Marge of West Brandywine; his sons Dennis of Grand Rapids, Mich. and David and his wife Susan of Buffalo, N.Y.; his daughter, Deborah and husband Duane Rehmeyer of Glenmoore; and his granddaughter Anna Ellis, of Brooklyn, N.Y. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10th, at Goshen Baptist Church, 1451 West Chester Pike, West Chester, PA 19382. The family will be greeting friends and relatives after the service. Light refreshments will also be served following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Gene Ellis Memorial Fund c/o Goshen Baptist Church and/or Kudvumisa Foundation USA, Inc. supporting Daran and Teresa Rehmeyer and their Christian Mission in Swaziland at 709 Highspire Road Glenmoore, PA 19343.
