Obituary Condolences

Joan Lois Careaga of West Chester Joan Lois Careaga, a resident of Wellington Hall of West Chester, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, after a short battle with cancer. She was the beloved wife of 53 years to the late Ramiro Careaga. Joan was born and raised in Chicago, Ill., one of seven children born on May 28, 1927 to the late Jeramiah St. Clair and Margaret Daly. She graduated from Austin High School. Joan will be forever remembered by her children, Roberta Cowles, Jeffrey Careaga and Claire Careaga; her sons-in-law, Donald Cowles, Jr. and Larry Wilhelm; her treasured grandchildren, Christopher and Kimberly Cowles, Jeffrey and Christina Careaga; and her sister, Rosemary Bussert . Joan worked as a secretary for American Airlines before becoming a wife and mother. In her retirement, Joan was an active participant in the Senior Olympic Games, and earned the gold medal at the National Games in shuffleboard in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2011. She loved to cook, read and play outdoor games. Joan moved from Chicago to New York, retired in North Carolina and Florida before settling in Pennsylvania to be near family. Joan moved to Wellington Hall in Dec. 2011 and made the most of the opportunity to become involved with that community. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 21, at Wellington Hall, 1361 E. Boot Road, West Chester, PA 19380. The family requests that in lieu of flowers all donations be sent to Neighborhood Hospice, 400 E. Marshall Street, West Chester, PA, 19380.
