Joseph W. Strode Jr. Obituary
Joseph W. Strode Jr. of West Chester Joseph W. Strode, Jr. of West Chester, passed away April 8, 2013, at Chester County Hospital, West Chester, surrounded by his wife and loved ones. Joe was passionate about his faith, family and community. Joe attended Mercersburg Academy. He graduated with a BA from Franklin and Marshall College where he also served on the Alumni Board for a number of years. He was a partner in Strode's Sausage and Scrapple, a family business that originated in 1876 and had the distinction of being one of original booths in the Reading Terminal Market. Joe had a strong history of community service in Chester County serving on West Chester's Borough Council for eight years, serving as president for two. One of Joe's proudest moments was when he was named as one of Chester County's Community Heroes and had the honor of carrying the Olympic Torch through West Chester towards the Atlanta Olympic games. In 1987 the Chamber of Commerce of Greater West Chester presented him with The Outstanding Citizen of the Year award. Another highlight of his life was when he was honored by Kesher Israel congregation and lit the sixth candle to honor the six million Jews that perished in the Holocaust. He was also instrumental in assuring that the then West Chester Community Center pool remained open by raising funds to rehabilitate the pool. In recognition of his life long commitment to racial equality, social justice and community service the Human Relations Council of Greater West Chester presented him with the Annual Dr. Robert H. Hanna Community Appreciation Award. The YMCA of Central Chester County presented him with Distinguished Service Award for his continued service. Joe was a devoted member of the West Chester Lions Club serving as president and was honored as a Melvin Jones Fellow for humanitarian service. Joe and his wife Betty were honored as they received the Meritorious Award from the West Chester Senior Center. He also volunteered at Chester County Hospital, Meals on Wheels. Joe was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for more than sixty-five years. He served in many capacities acting as Deacon and Trustee but his true love was singing in the choir and taking flowers to those who could not come to church. Joe was a devoted husband to his wife of 60 years Betty, and a cherished father to his children; Dana Strode-Tritle and her husband Bill, Joseph W. Strode and his wife Kathleen, Brad Strode and his wife Lisa; as well as his beloved nine grandchildren. Anyone that knew Joe, knew that he was an avid sports fan from amateur to professional sports. His one true love was golf belonging to West Chester Golf and Country Club, Buck Hill Falls and Pine Valley where he was able to share many special moments with family and dear friends. Joe will be sorely missed by us all. Relatives and friends are invited to his Memorial Service, 11 a.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church of West Chester, 130 W. Miner St., West Chester, with a visitation from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. There will be an opportunity to share memories at the service. Interment will be private.
