Peter J. Short Jr. of Downingtown Peter J. Short, Jr., 97, of Downingtown, peacefully passed away on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012 at Harrison Senior Living in Christiana, Pa., with his loving daughter, Marjorie, and granddaughter, Eileen, by his side. Born in Coatesville, on July 26, 1915, he was the first of six children of the late Peter J., Sr. and Cora Doan Short. Pete attended St. Cecelia's School, St. Charles Seminary, Drexel Institute, and LaSalle Extension Law School. He was a registered professional engineer and land surveyor. On November 28, 1935, Thanksgiving Day, he married the love of his life, Mary Merkt Short, and they enjoyed 69 years of marriage at the time of her passing in May 2005. For a number of years they were well known for the way they complimented each other with similar color attire. He began working at Lukens Steel Company in 1934 in the Engineering Department and later became manager of the Real Estate Department, retiring after 43 years of service. While at Lukens, he served his community as a member of the Chester County Airport Authority, Brandywine Water Resources Committee, Coatesville Rotary Club and Coatesville Area Chamber of Commerce. Peter was an active member of St. Joseph parish in Downingtown for 75 years, belonging to the Holy Name Society, singing in the choir and lecturing. He also attended daily Mass for many years. Mr. Short is survived by his children, Richard James Short and his wife, Geraldine, of York and Marjorie S. Ferris and her husband, Bryant, of Downingtown; sisters, Dorothy Suttle of Aberdeen, Md. and Mary Oakes of West Chester; brother, Charles Short of Honey Brook; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was also predeceased by his brother, William C. Short and sister, Elizabeth Slider. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6th at St. Joseph Church, 338 Manor Ave., Downingtown, PA 19335, where family and friends may call from 12 noon to 1p.m. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Downingtown. The family would like to thank the staff of Harrison Senior Living and Heartland Hospice for their excellent care of our beloved Dad and Pop Pop.
