Philip Henry Sears Jr. Obituary
Philip Henry Sears Jr. of Westtown, Pa., died suddenly Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014, at his home.
He was born in Duluth, Minn., on Feb. 10, 1933 to Philip Henry Sears and Esther Ryden Sears.
The family moved to Grand Rapids, Mich., in 1937, where Phil grew up.
He graduated from Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills High School in 1951 and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1955, with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He was a brother of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity.
Upon graduation, Phil enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and flew missions as navigator on a B-47 for the Strategic Air Command (SAC) based in Plattsburg, N.Y. It was there that he met and married his wife of 45 years, Eileen Tompkins Sears, who predeceased him in 2003.
After leaving the Air Force, he was employed by Scott Paper Co. for more than 30 years, living in Detroit, Mich., Chicago, Ill., and Durham, N.C., before settling in Westtown.
Phil was a member of Fairview Presbyterian Church, Glenmoore, Pa., the West Goshen Lions Club, and served as a Westtown Township committeeman.
He was a dedicated Scout Leader of Chester County Council, Boy Scouts of America and a Vigil Honor Member Order of the Arrow.
He is survived by his two sons, Arthur T. Sears of Woodbury, N.J., and eldest son Philip H. Sears III of Glenmoore, with his wife, Brenda, and daughters, Katherine and Diana. Phil is also survived by his sister, Karen Sears Sheldon of Hanover, N.H., as well as several nieces and nephews and their families.
Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service honoring him at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Fairview Presbyterian Church, 800 Fairview Road, Glenmoore, with a visitation beginning at 10 a.m.
Interment will be in the adjoining Fairview Presbyterian Cemetery.
An evening visitation will also be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 18, at DellaVecchia, Reilly, Smith & Boyd Funeral Home Inc., 410 N. Church St., West Chester, 610-696-1181, www.DellaFH.com.
