Walter H. Seitzer of West Chester Walter H. Seitzer, age 91, of West Chester, died on Wednesday, November 27, 2013, at Linden Hall in Kennett Square. He was the husband of Marianne (Stuk) Seitzer. Born February 28, 1922 in Williamsport, Pa., he was the son of Boyd Seitzer and Eleanor Weiss Seitzer. He was educated in Williamsport schools and, upon graduation from high school in the 1930s, served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. A veteran of WWII, Walter served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in Northern France and the Rhineland. After the war, he attended the University of Chicago, where he received an M.S. in Physical Chemistry in 1951. He continued graduate studies at Princeton University, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1954. Walter was employed as a Research Chemist at the Sun Company in Marcus Hook, Pa., primarily in the catalytic upgrading of petroleum and synthetic oils (including oil from tar sands, shale oil, and coal liquids) to fuels and chemicals. He authored a number of technical papers and was awarded over 50 patents during the course of his career. He was an emeritus member of the American Chemical Society and was active in the Catalyst Society of Philadelphia, where he had earlier served as chairman. His interest in encouraging the young to pursue careers in the sciences led him to serve on the Executive Board of the Philadelphia Science Council during the 1970s-80s. Outside of work, he was an avid and very serious gardener, for decades producing a significant amount of food for his family using only a small plot of land in his backyard. He was an amateur orchardist, beekeeper, and a dedicated conservationist. His other interests included reading and travel. In addition to his wife of 62 years, he is survived by his sons Christopher and Kenneth, his daughter Janet, and his grandchildren Phillip, Alice, and Kenneth. Donations in his memory may be made to Neighborhood Health Agencies/ Neighborhood Hospice of West Chester. A life celebration will be announced at a later date.
