Angela Cristoforo Obituary

Angela M. 'Judy' Cristoforo of Coatesville Angela M. "Judy" Cristoforo died Monday, March 18, 2013, at her home at Freedom Village where she resided for the past two years. Born in Coatesville, on May 31, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Joseph A. and Mary J. Rambo Cristoforo. A life-long resident of Coatesville, Judy was a 1957 graduate of S. Horace Scott Senior High School, where she served as class president and was class valedictorian. She graduated from Rosemont College in 1961 with a B.A. in Spanish and a minor in library science. She received both a M.ED. and a M.S. in guidance and counseling from Villanova University. Her 41 year career as an educator in the Coatesville Area School District was spent as a Spanish teacher and then as a guidance counselor at the Coatesville Area Senior High School. During these years, she served as co-advisor to the yearbook, co-coordinator for graduation activities and co-advisor to the Spanish Club. She received the CASH Educator of the Year Award from the National Honor Society and was also selected Teacher of the Year by the Coatesville Area PTA. A life-long member of Our Lady of the Rosary Church, Judy served as a lector, a Sunday counter and was a member of the Ladies Sodality. Angela was a member of PSERS, the Coatesville Hall of Fame, and the ABC Group of Brandywine Hospital. She delivered Meals on Wheels and volunteered with Operation Thanksgiving/Christmas. Angela devoted her life to her family, her church, her community and her students. As an avid sports fan, she proudly cheered the Red Raiders in victory and defeat. She generously contributed to all community fund raisers to help promote the city of Coatesville. She supported and encouraged all young people to become life-long learners. "Miss Cris" helped countless young people to be the best they could be. Angela is survived by her double first cousin, Rosetta Rambo of West Chester; her cousin, Anthony Borrelli and wife, Joan of Springfield, and their children, David and wife, Dana of Milford, Del., Adam and wife, Beth of Blue Bell, Pa. and Matthew of Elkton, Md.; and by the many friends and students whose lives she touched. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 23, at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 80 S. 17th Ave. Family and friends may call from 8:30 to 10:45 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Private interment will be held at St. Cecilia Cemetery, Coatesville. Following the funeral service, family and friends are invited to a luncheon at St. Anthony's Lodge, Downingtown. In her memory, contributions may be made to Our Lady of the Rosary Church at the above address or to the Angela M. Cristoforo Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o CASH Guidance Department, 1445 E. Miss Cris impacted two generations of my family. She had my father at Scott High '64 for Spanish and she was my guidance counselor '97 CASH. She was just a real neat lady. She was blunt, honest, yet caring. I knew she passed a few years ago, but I wanted to drop my thoughts on Miss Cris.

As a retired teacher of the Coatesville Area School District I remember Miss Cristoforo being such a wonderful teacher who WAS Coatesville through and through. She loved her students, community and co-workers. Hard to believe that a year has passed since her passing. Let us never forget such a wonderful teacher who gave basically her whole life to the community of Coatesville!

Miss Cris, we barely got to know each other but after our daily-hello-friendship began, I looked forward to saying hi to you on my way to French class. You gifted me the surprise of a lifetime when I was presented with the Cristoforo Scholarship at my class of 2000 graduation. Your kindness, generosity, attention to a timid student, and dedication to our school and community gave me a chance to improve my future. I can never forget, you boosted my confidence -- a woman who barely knew me had faith enough to invest in my future. You are remarkable, and your legacy is unmatched. Thank you.

This obituary really captures who Miss Cris was to many of us. I remember coming back to school after dropping out for a year. Miss Cris says, "I know your family and I know what you have been through (the murder of my father). Now get yourself together because you are going to graduate this year darling!" If I was absent, when I came back, she checked on me. I graduated that year with honor roll every marking period. She will always be remembered for that type of caring towards people, especially Coatesvillians. Let us not forget her trademark bun that only she could wear perfectly on a daily basis and her smile that would light up your heart. You will be missed and the district has not been the same since you retired. Thank you for all that you have done for us all.
