Obituary Condolences

David Buell Coghlan of West Chester David Buell Coghlan, 91, of West Chester, passed away Oct. 30, 2011, at his home after a brief illness. Dave was born and raised in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, the third child of Owen and Ava Buell Coghlan. He graduated with Yale University's class of 1941 with a degree in chemical engineering and began his career serving U.S. wartime efforts at Allied Chemical as development engineer for production of TNT and other materials. After the war and three years at DuPont, Dave served more than 40 years with Foote Mineral Company as manager of development engineering, designing lithium mining operations in Chile's Solar de Atacama and locations across the U.S. After retiring in 1994, he remained engaged in engineering for many years as an independent consultant and as a West Whiteland Township Planning Commission member. Outside his career, Dave was deeply engaged in the arts. Beginning in college with the Yale Glee Club and Dramat theater group, on to the final years of his life when he joined the Yale Alumni Chorus's humanitarian performances in China, Russia, and beyond, Dave was passionate about choral singing and theater. The Arden Shakespeare Gild, Ardensingers, the Brandywiners, the Barbershop Harmony Society, and the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Chester County were other groups to which he lent his voice over the years. Dave also was an avid dancer with the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society's Delaware Valley branch, a sail-boater who often raced his Flying Dutchman as a member of the Elk River Yacht Club, and a longtime supporter of the Chester County Art Association, where he once served as board chair. Dave is survived by his wife, Carolyn, and their daughter, Elisa (Devin); all his children from his previous marriage, Jill, David, Jeremy (Bly) and Owen (Debbie); eight grandchildren, Jeremy, Jessica, Andrew, David, James, Owen, Joseph and Jenna; and four great-grandchildren, Parker, Ryan, Evan, and Hadley. A visitation will be held 10 a.m. November 19, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m., at the DellaVecchia, Reilly, Smith & Boyd Funeral Home, Inc., 410 N.
