George Duffield Hodgson III

Obituary Condolences

George Duffield Hodgson III of West Chester George Duffield Hodgson, III of West Chester, died suddenly on April 2, 2013. With great sadness, our family announces the passing of our beloved family member. He was a son, brother, uncle, husband, father and grandfather. Blessed with a sunny disposition, a wonderful sense of humor, and a generous spirit, he was always good company. He lived to be of service to others. He never missed a chance to perform a service, offer a positive slant to a vexing problem, or say a kind word about another person. In addition, he served as benefactor and mentor to several area families. George was a WWII veteran. Upon leaving the service, he was employed as a driver for the Darmel Oil Company. He next served for a long time as a professional driver for West Chester based A. Duie Pyle, Inc., where he was lauded for his outstanding safe-driving record. Born in 1927 to George Duffield Hodgson II and Beatrice Preston Hart Hodgson, he and his parents lived in Swarthmore. Then, tragically, his father was killed by a freight train, at night, in 1929. His mother, his father's sister and a friend were all injured, but survived. Beatrice later met and married Wilford Black in 1935. And so, a new blended family was launched. Survivors include George D. Hodgson IV and his wife Mary Ellen; siblings, Shirley Black Barry, Cynthia Black Hazen, Stephen Douglas Black, and David Andrew Black; brother-in-law, Alex M. Barry; former sister-in- law, Krystal Erwin Black; nephew, Jack Hines Jr. and his wife Marilyn, and Virginia Grunwell Hines, widow of Jack Hines, Sr. Also surviving are many more extended family members who loved their "Uncle George." Pre-deceasing George were his wife Phyllis (Sue) Hines, loving long time companion, M. Louise Hines, grandson Bryan Hodgson, niece Karen Barry Amaral, and grandniece Patricia Joy Black; also brother-in-law, Joseph N. Hazen. Relatives and friends are invited to his Graveside Service, 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at Bradford Cemetery, 521 Northbrook Rd., West Chester, PA 19380. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Home of the Sparrow, 969 E. Swedesford Road, Exton, PA 19341. Arrangements by DellaVecchia, Reilly, Smith & Boyd Funeral Home, Inc. 410 N. Church Street, West Chester, 610-696-1181; www.DellaFH.com.
