Joanne M. Thompson Pikur of Gibsonia, Pa. Joanne M. Thompson Pikur, 59, of Gibsonia, passed away peacefully November 10, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on August 6, 1952 in Abbington, Joanne was the daughter of John C. Thompson Jr. and the late Anne McNabb Thompson. Joanne was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. In addition to her father, John C. Thompson of Newtown, she is survived by her husband, Thomas Pikur, who she married July 13, 1985; daughters, Brittany and Victoria Pikur, both of Richland Twp.; brother, Jack Thompson (Barbara), of West Chester; brother-in-law, Dan Pikur (Robin), of Cranberry Twp.; and three nephews, John, Jason and Jeffrey. Joanne was raised on a dairy farm in Newtown, Pa. She attended St. Andrew's Elementary School and graduated from Council Rock High School. She then graduated from West Chester University in 1974 with a degree in health and physical education and received her master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Joanne was a lifelong educator of 35 years in the Hampton School District. As a beloved teacher, the school honored her by naming the Central Elementary School Gymnasium "Pikur's Place". Friends and family will be received from 3 to 8 p.m. on Monday, November 14, at Herbert R. King Jr. Funeral Home Inc., 2841 Woodland Circle, Allison Park. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 15, at St. Richard's Roman Catholic Church, 3841 Dickey Road, Gibsonia. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joanne's name may be made to the Hillman Cancer Center checks payable to UPMC Cancer Center, UPCI (University Pittsburgh Cancer Institute) UPMC Pavilion Suite 1B, 5150 Centre Ave., Pitts, PA 15232.
