Joseph L. Novello

Joseph L. Novello of West Chester Joseph L. Novello died peacefully on March 10, 2013 at the Neighborhood Hospice in West Chester, just short of his 91st birthday. He was born on April 9, 1922 to John and Adelina Novello of Third Street, Elizabeth, N.J. Mr. Novello attended Thomas Jefferson High School where he excelled as an athlete and a scholar. With help from his older brother Paul, he was able to attend the Pennsylvania State College, where his academic studies were interrupted when he volunteered for the Army Air Corp during WWII. After several years of honorable service overseas as a Captain in the Weather Service, he returned to Penn State where he graduated with a degree in petroleum engineering. He then began work for the Standard Oil Company, until circumstances led him to change careers and take a job in sales with the Films Division of Encyclopaedia Britannica. He retired from the company in 1987 as an award winning Regional Sales Manager. While in the service, he met Alvina "Dolly" Palladino, also from Elizabeth and they were married on Sept. 5, 1949. They raised a family of six children - Mary, Elaine, Joe Jr., Diane, Judy and Andrea - first in Cranford, N.J. and later in Devon. Joe and Dolly were happily married for more than 55 years, until Dolly passed away unexpectedly in 2006. Joe Novello spent his last few years enjoying life at Wellington Hall in West Chester, where he was an active participant in the Thespian group - the Hershey's Mill Players - and enjoyed singing and socializing among the residents, especially his dear friend Mary Betty Roeder. He was particularly fond of his large extended family, brothers and sister, nephews and nieces and is survived by his six children, 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was a wonderful father, excellent companion, always had a good story and was loved by family and friends alike. He will be dearly missed by all. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Joseph's Memorial Mass at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at Daylesford Abbey, 220 South Valley Road, Paoli, PA 19301. Interment will be private.
