Obituary Condolences

Marion B. Washington, 95, of Malvern Marion B. Washington, 95, of Malvern passed away on Sunday, September 9, 2012. She was the wife of the late Arthur W. Washington, Jr. Born October 23, 1916 in Townsville, N.C. she was the daughter of the late Goodrich D. and Bette Thomas Brame. Marion graduated from Henderson Institute in 1935. She helped put herself through college by working as a maid for private families in Haverford, Bryn Mawr and Nantucket. She graduated from Shaw University in 1939. She later took courses at Villanova University to get her teaching certificate for Pennsylvania. On February 22, 1953 Marion married Arthur W. Washington, Jr. and from this union, one child was born, Shawn Floretta. In 1959 the family moved from Philadelphia to Malvern, Pa. where Marion and Arthur enjoyed 41 years of marriage until his death. Marion taught in the Philadelphia School System at John Wanamaker Jr. High for several years, serving as the department head of Home Economic before transferring to the Coatesville School District and retired in 1981 from the Gordon Jr. High school. She was very active in her community, and the Paoli Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder and taught Sunday School. She attended school board meetings, was a member of the NAACP, Civic Association, and was a charter member in the Literary Guild (a social club on the Main Line.) In her younger days Marion was an avid tennis player and star basketball player. In 1989 she was inducted into the Shaw University Basketball Hall of Fame. She loved playing sports and watching sports on television. She also loved to collect bells and angels. She gave generously to her church and many other organizations. She was a loving person and faithfully read her bible and prayed without ceasing every day. She loved her God, family and her church. She will be greatly missed. Surviving are her daughter, Shawn W. Brown, son-in-law, Gary Brown; grand- sons, Damon T. Washington and Frederick A. Brown; sister, Annie B. Harris of Clementine, N.J.; nephews, Goodrich Brame and Kenneth Addison and a host of other relatives and friends. An Uplifting Life Celebration will be held on Thursday, September 13, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Paoli Presbyterian Church, 225 S. Valley Rd, Paoli, Pa. Friends may greet the family from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at the Church. Interment will be held privately. Donations in Marion's name can be made to Habitat for Humanity.
