Nora Matilda "Shorty" Mellinger

Obituary Condolences

Nora Matilda Mellinger of Oxford Nora Matilda Mellinger, or "Shorty" as she was affectionately called by those who knew and loved her, went home to be with the Lord on July 16, 2012 at the age of 97. Born December 13, 1914 in Colerain Township, Lancaster County, Shorty was the daughter of the late Elvin G. and Nora H. Boyer Mellinger, Sr. She was a lifelong member of Union Presbyterian Church in Kirkwood. She attended Colerain High School, graduating from Quarryville High School. She was a telephone operator for the Kirkwood Exchange for 14 years and a receptionist for the Oxford Cabinet Company for 16 years. A devoted daughter, she lived with and cared for her mother until her death in 1987. She enjoyed sports, outdoor yard work and gardening. Shorty was a resident of Ware Presbyterian Village for the last 12 years of her life. She is survived by two sisters, Verna Mae Walton, wife of the late Kenneth K. Walton of Kirkwood and Dorothy M. Sumner, wife of William A. Sumner of Oxford, as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, B. Frank Mellinger, Elvin G. Mellinger, Jr. and Robert B. Mellinger and sister, Emma E. Mellinger. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, at the Edward L. Collins, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc., 86 Pine St. Oxford, where friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Union Cemetery, Kirkwood. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Union Presbyterian Church, 5637 Street Rd. Kirkwood, PA 17536.
