Richard P. "Dick" Barbor Obituary
Richard 'Dick' P. Barbor of Glen Mills Richard "Dick" P. Barbor, 81, of Glen Mills, died on October 17, 2011 at Riddle Memorial Hospital. Born to the late D. Dean and Etta Parry Barbor in North Irwin, Pa., he resided at Maris Grove, Glen Mills, for the past 4 years, and for the previous 42, in West Chester. An avid outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman, he loved to roam the fields, forests and streams, particularly in his native Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Clymer Hunting Club and the National Rifle Association. He retired in 1986 from the Sun Company, Research and Development Division (32 years' service), a client coordinator and technical assistant to the Director of Research and Development. Several successful petrochemical and petroleum processes were commercially implemented by teams of which he was an integral member. He held several U.S. and Canadian patents. He was a graduate of Lafayette College and the University of Delaware, where he earned his B.S. and M.S., respectively, in chemical engineering. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He was a U.S. Army combat veteran of the Korean War, serving as a First Lieutenant in the 461st Infantry Battalion (Hvy Mtr) from 1952 to 1953, where he was decorated with the Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman's Badge, and the Purple Heart, among others. He was a longtime Republican Committeeman in East Goshen Township and also served on the Chester County Development Authority whose mission was to attract industry and jobs to Chester County. While his children were growing up he was an active participant in various youth activities, including the YMCA Indian Guides, Great Valley Little League, and Boy Scouts. He loved music, particularly jazz, and played saxophone, clarinet, and piano and performed in a barbershop quartet. Surviving him are his wife of 52 years, Jeanne Barbor (nee Cowan); four children, Richard (Linda) Barbor of Elkton, Md., Dean Barbor of West Chester, Susan Barbor (Thomas Hampton Jr.) of Jupiter, Fla. and Carolyn Barbor (Michael) Zahaby of New York, N.Y.; two brothers, Gerald and John Barbor, both of York; and grandchildren, Richard and Katherine Barbor, Molly and Rebecca Hampton and Jessica Zebley. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 21, at St. Agnes Cemetery, West Chester. Family and friends are invited to a memorial service at 12:30 p.m. on Friday at Maris Grove, 200 Maris Grove Way, Glen Mills, PA 19342.
