Sgt. James A. Sweeney Jr. (Ret.) Obituary
Sgt. (Ret) James A. Sweeney Jr. of Downingtown Sgt. (Ret) James A. Sweeney, Jr., 79, of Downingtown, passed away on Friday, Aug. 23, 2013 at the Paoli Memorial Hospital. Born July 7, 1934 in West Bradford Twp., he was the son the late James A. Sweeney, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Wilson Sweeney. Sgt. Sweeney graduated from Downingtown Joint High School, class of 1952. Following high school he served in the U.S. Air Force, later joining the Downingtown Police Force, retiring after over 23 years of service. He was a lifelong resident of Downingtown and was known by many as the "Mayor of Glenside" where he loved to participate in the Annual Good Neighbors Day. Prior to becoming a police officer, Sgt. Sweeney worked at Davey Paper Company and Lukens Steel. He was a member of Mt. Raymond UAME Church in Downingtown. In his active years, Sgt. Sweeney was a member the Chester County Lodge #11 and past president of the West Chester F.O.P., Downingtown Price-Harden American Legion and Minquas Fire Company. He also loved fishing, hunting, and sports especially the Penn Relays, Philadelphia Eagles and sailing. Surviving are his three daughters, Maureen Lynne Sweeney-Perry (Charles) of Tomah, Wis., Teresa Annette Sweeney of Downingtown, and Danyele Evette Price (Paris) of Tomah, Wis; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Adella Frances Simpson of Ambler, and Hannah Gloria Butcher (Theodore) of West Chester; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 30th, at Milestone Events, LLC, 600 E. Market St., West Chester. A viewing will be held from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Fraternal Order of Police Ritualistic Ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at the Rolling Green Memorial Park, West Chester.
