Obituary Condolences

Shirley Smith Wilson of Kennett Square Shirley Smith Wilson, age 82, of Kennett Square, Pa. died Wednesday, April 25, 2012, surrounded by her family at her home in the Crosslands Retirement Community, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, on June 7, 1929, and raised in Rutland, Vermont, she was the daughter of the late Flora Stuart Smith and Kenneth Lloyd Smith of Rutland. After graduating from Rutland High School, she attended Simmons College, Boston, Massachusetts, graduating with a Bachelor of Library Science degree in 1951. She was married on June 2, 1951, in Trinity Episcopal Church, Rutland, to Kenneth Edgar Wilson, Jr., a graduate of the Naval Academy with the class of 1948. The couple moved every two or three years during her life as a Navy wife. She volunteered with various groups including Navy Relief, the Red Cross, local hospital, church and school libraries at most of their duty stations, including Washington, D.C.; Groton, Connecticut; Dunoon, Scotland; and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Mrs. Wilson's interests included sewing and needlework, music, theatre, and she was an avid reader. In their later years, after over twenty moves in the Navy, the Wilsons enjoyed more travel together, particularly in Europe. They also treasured time with their family in their vacation home in Belmont, Vermont. It was the site of annual family reunions. Her principle achievement, point of pride, and always top priority was her family. She was a much loved role model for her children. She and her husband of sixty-one years, now a retired Navy Rear Admiral, are survived by four children, daughters Barbara Wilson Conley and her husband, Lloyd of Midlothian, Virginia; Nancy Wilson Drake, and her husband William of Exton, Pennsylvania; and Sarah Wilson McKay and her husband Daniel of Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania; and a son Kenneth E. Wilson III and his wife Miriam of Zelienople, Pennsylvania. She also leaves eleven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and a brother, Kenneth Stuart Smith of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her funeral service will be on Monday, April 30, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Advent, 401 N. Union St. Kennett Square, PA 19348. A reception will follow in the parish hall. Interment will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis Md. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Advent, 201 Crestline Drive, Kennett Square, PA 19348 or to the Crosslands-Kendal Fund, PO Box 100, Kennett Square, PA 19348.
