William Hurley Obituary
William T. Hurley, of West Chester, passed away on Jan. 27, 2011, at age 82. Bill was born on May 20, 1928.
A graduate of West Catholic High School and St. Joseph's University, Bill Hurley joined the air force and later became a captain for both Pan American and United Airlines, where he enjoyed 38 years of service. During his tenure as captain for both Pan American and United Airlines he earned the distinguished honor of flying the press corp. for five consecutive presidents of the United States of America. Notably, Captain Bill was one of the first American pilots permitted to fly/enter Mainland China and was directed by President Nixon to fly Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra to Beijing, China in 1973. His superior service garnered him invitations to the White House where he and Joanne met President(s) Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan and Bush Sr. as well as countless well-known, high-level media and political figures.
Capt. Bill, who humbly preferred to be known as Bill Hurley, is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Joanne Hurley; and their four sons, William (Chip) Hurley, Stephen Hurley, Brian Hurley and Matthew Hurley and their respective spouses, Kaying, Melissa, Jeanine and Shannon, all of which consider him to be a father figure and an amazing confidante. Joanne and Bill have eight grandchildren. Bill is also survived by his sister Jane Staub and her husband, Robert.
The list of people whom Bill had a positive influence on is endless, as are the numerous (and humorous) stories/memories that surface during family gatherings. To those who were privileged to have known William Hurley, know he lived an abundant and fulfilled life, surrounded by people who cared deeply for him. He was not only a loving husband, a model father, but also a special father-in-law, a cherished "pop-pop," a mentor and, most of all, our friend.
Befitting with Bill and Joanne living their lives with both generosity and humility, they've made the decision to accept donations, in lieu of flowers or gifts, to: Shaina Horton Fund, c/o The Bryn Mawr Trust, 801 W. Lancaster Ave., Bryn Mawr, PA 19010-3396.
Bill Hurley's memorial service is scheduled for noon on Saturday, Feb. 26, at Ss. Peter and Paul Church, 1325 Boot Road, West Chester, 610-692-2216.
