Michael Vance Mellinger Obituary
Michael Vance Mellinger, 65, of Exton, formerly of Harrisburg, passed away on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at Neighborhood Hospice of West Chester. He was the beloved husband of Karen J. Mellinger (nee Solliday), with whom he shared 43 years of marriage. Born in Harrisburg, he was the son of the late Vance C. and Arlene Berrier Mellinger. In his younger years Michael earned the Eagle Scout badge. He was a 1963 graduate of Central Dauphin High School and received his bachelor of arts degree in 1967 from Bloomsburg University, where he was a founding member of SIO Fraternity. He continued his education at Syracuse University, where he received his PhD in biology in 1971. Mr. Mellinger was employed by Sara Lee in Chicago where he worked as environmental director. Michael loved the outdoors and enjoyed running marathons, biking, hiking, camping, skiing and kayaking. He trekked to the base camp of Mt. Everest at a height of 18,000 feet, and summited Mt. Kilimanjaro. He coached wrestling, soccer and baseball for LYA in addition to serving as their director of wrestling. He also was a collector of clocks, and enjoyed Doo-Wop music. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Scott M. and wife, Connie, of Coatesville, and Christopher J. and wife, Deborah, of Exton; and by grandchildren, Michael, Daniel, Abigail, Katelyn, Madelyn and Skylar. A memorial service will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, October 4, at the James J. Terry Funeral Home, 736 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown, where family and friends may call from 11 a.m. to 12 noon.
