Cheston Simmons Obituary
Cheston Simmons, age 83, of Newtown Square, Pa. Cheston Simmons, age 83, of Newtown Square, Pa., passed away peacefully at the Dunwoody care center on August 30th 2012. He was born January 24th, 1929 in New York City to Cheston and Anne Beebe Simmons. He was raised in Rumson, N.J. with his two sisters, Beverly and Delight. Mr. Simmons attended the Rumson Country Day School and graduated from Pomfret Academy in Connecticut, where he was an accomplished athlete. He then graduated with a B.A. from Yale University in 1951. While at Yale he played on the baseball team. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War as a Lieutenant, platoon leader and weapons specialist. Mr. Simmons settled in the Philadelphia suburbs and worked as a marketing executive for Smith, Kline and French in center city, retiring in 1986. He was a longtime member of the Gulph Mills Golf Club. He was also an avid saltwater sportsman who enjoyed fishing and boating. He fished extensively over the years in Sandy Hook, New Jersey; Block Island, Rhode Island and Stonington, Maine, where he resided for many summers. He cared deeply about protecting the natural environment and regularly supported several charitable organizations. He is survived by his son, Cheston Jr., (Kimberley), daughter, Pamela McKeon(Greg); stepdaughters Jennifer Bakewell and Page Sterns; niece Karen Schliefer as well as five grandchildren and a companion Mary Drayton. A private memorial service will be held per his wishes.
