Donald E. Meads Obituary
Donald E. Meads, formerly of Glenmoore and Elverson Donald E. Meads of Jupiter, Fla., born Sept. 23, 1920, died peacefully July 11, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Jane Lightner Meads; their seven children; 23 grandchildren and 21 great- grandchildren. A graduate of Dartmouth College and Harvard Business School, Mr. Meads enjoyed a successful business career which included the positions as CFO of IDS and INA and CEO of IBEC and CertainTeed Corp. Directorships included Singer Corp, Quaker Oats Co, CIGNA, Perdue Farms, Chicago Milwaukee Corp and Fidelity Bank (Philadelphia). Always active in civic organizations, Don Meads served as Chairman of the World Affairs Council and was a Trustee of Valley Forge Military Academy, Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, Thomas Jefferson University, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts plus several other organizations. In service to his country, Don received five Battle Stars and the DFC as a Marine Corps pilot in the South Pacific and was associated for several years with the Central Intelligence Agency. On June 15, 2013, Don and Jane celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in Jupiter, Fla. attended by their children Edward G. Meads (Hudson, Wis.), Robert C. Meads (Naples, Fla.), Laurence G. Meads (Bronxville, N.Y.), Judith M. Antrim (Rochester, Ill.), Suzanne M. O'Neil (East Falls, Pa.), Clifford L. Meads (Cashiers, N.C.) and Nancy M. Chapin (North Palm Beach, Fla.). Also in attendance were his older sister, Nettie M. Hoyt (Vero Beach, Fla.) and more than thirty grandchildren and great grandchildren. As one who measured success by the accomplishments of a family, Don Meads was blessed by abundance. A memorial service will be held at the Wayzata Community Church on August 31, 2013. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested contributions to Hospice of Palm Beach County or the Salvation Army.
