Kermit Hill "Kerry" Lyman Jr. Obituary
Kermit Hill "Kerry" Lyman Jr., 76, of Downingtown passed away on Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, at Brandywine Hospital.
He was the loving husband of Cynthia Pirro Lyman, with whom he shared 49 years of marriage.
He was born in Philadelphia on Oct. 9, 1937, to Dr. Kermit H. Lyman and Gertrude Kittilson Lyman.
Kerry graduated from Havertown High School in 1957 and attended Eastern Baptist College and Millersville State College, receiving a B.A. in Industrial Arts in 1967, as well as a Master's of Education in Industrial Arts in 1970. He subsequently received Supervisor's and Principal's Certificates from Cheyney State College. He taught industrial arts at Stetson Junior High and Fugett Middle School, retiring from teaching in 1989 to start his own carpentry business.
He was a very active and faithful member of Hopewell United Methodist Church for 41 years, where he was an usher and participated in the Passion Play as an actor and stage crew member. He employed his carpentry skills at the church and on mission trips to Mississippi and Belize, as well as on 18 mission trips to Puerto Rico.
He was a member of the U.S. Army Reserve for 31 years, attaining the rank of master sergeant. As a Boy Scout, Kerry attended the National Jamboree in Irvine, Calif., and the High Adventure Base at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. As a parent, he was active in Hopewell Boy Scout Troop 8 and accompanied the scouts on his son's Florida Seabase High Adventure Trip.
Kerry loved traveling with his wife and spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren and great-granddaughter. His newest passion was decorative woodturning and he had recently joined the Keystone Turners.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Carol (Mike) Reagoso of Wilmington, Del., and a brother, Ralph (Carol) Lyman of Havertown; children Jennifer (Matt) Wagner of Downingtown, Kermit (Pamela) Lyman III of Philadelphia, and Andrew Lyman of Downingtown; grandchildren Megan, Samuel, and Emma, and great-granddaughter Emily.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, at Hopewell United Methodist Church. Family and friends will be received on Monday, Jan. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the James J. Terry Funeral Home, 736 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown, and from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Hopewell United Methodist Church, 852 Hopewell Road, Downingtown. Interment will be private.
