Clyde G. German, 85, of Buckeye, Arizona, died March 8, 2014, from Alzheimer's disease.
Clyde was a son of George J. and Fidelia M. German of Grinnell, Iowa. He was born in Grinnell December 20, 1928. He Married Ada M. McQuiston of Riverside, California, on November 22, 1953. Clyde and Ada celebrated their 60th anniversary last November. He was preceded in death by his sister Katherine Mercedes German and brother Gerald Milton German. He also leaves behind his two brothers Larry German and Hugh German of Grinnell, Iowa.
Clyde served 3 1/2 years in the U. S. Air Force before being medically retired due to severe burns suffered in a B-25 crash on August 3, 1953.
Subsequent employment was with North American Aviation at Palmdale, California, at which time the couple's two daughters were born: Kathryn A (German) Copeland of Buckeye, AZ and Linda L. (German) Cheever of Athol, Idaho.
In the 1960's Clyde entered the United States Postal Service in Grants Pass, Oregon and retired in 1988 from the Phoenix, Arizona, facility after 30 years of service.
In Clyde's early years growing up in Grinnell, he attended the First Friends Church, was very active in school sports as one of the "first five" on the Grinnell High School basketball team and received numerous awards in football. He attended Iowa University prior to entering the Air Force in 1950. Clyde was always faithful to God and loved attending church. He last attended the Assembly of God church in Buckeye, Arizona. He was a member of the American Legion Post 96 in Arizona.
Clyde enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and RV'ing, but most of all his growing family of six grand-children and nine great-grandchildren.
A military ceremony, funeral and burial was conducted at the National VA Memorial Cemetery in Phoenix, Arizona, at 1:00 P.M., Thursday, March 13, 2014, with Rev. Keith Howard officiating. Guitarist Steve Copeland sang "Oh, What A Day" with attendees joining in on the chorus. Grandson Adam Copeland delivered a eulogy representing the grandchildren: Nathan Copeland, Stephanie (Cheever) Madrid, Anna (Copeland) Moyer, Jennifer (Cheever) Dunn, Patricia (Cheever) Willbanks.
