Harold F. Sitts, 92, of Peoria, AZ, passed peacefully on December 29, 2012 at Freedom Plaza Care Center. Hal was born March 12, 1920 in Electron, WA to Fred and Flora (Hobbs) Sitts.
He graduated from Sumner High School in 1938. He graduated from WSC (now Washington State University) with a B.S. in Civil Engineering in 1942.
Hal married his college sweetheart Winifred June Westman on August 14, 1942. Hal was called up to active duty with the US Army from 9/16/1942 to 5/31/1946. He served in New Guinea and the Philippine Islands, earning a Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement for directing the layout and planning of several airdromes. He served in the 865th Engineer Aviation Battalion, as an Engineering & Operations Officer. He was honorably discharged from the Army of the US on 4/01/1953, as a Major. Other decorations included the Philippine Liberation Medal with 1 battle star, Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal with 2 battle stars, American Theater Service Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
In 1955, Hal and his partner, Gene Hill, started Sitts and Hill Engineers Inc in Tacoma, WA. While in Tacoma, Hal served as President of the Tacoma Section ASCE, Chairman of the PNWC ASCE, Chairman of the Elks Board #174 (30 year member), President of the Tacoma Boys Club (25 years on the board), Board member of Lakewood General Hospital for 10 years, and for Pierce County, served on the Building Code Committee, the Ferry Advisory Committee, and the Board of Appeals.
After retiring in October of 1984, he and June eventually ended up in Sun City, AZ. There they became members of Faith Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder and DNA leader. They were members of the Palmbrook Golf & Country Club. Hal loved family time, playing cards, gardening, camping, fishing, clamming, boating, skiing, golfing, and being in the outdoors.
He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. Hal was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Dorothy (Sitts) Backs, and one son, Ronald Sitts. Survivors include his wife of 70 years, June, his children Rick Sitts of Puyallup, WA., Diane (Bob) Bahr of Spokane, WA, grandchildren Jenn (Ken) Kester, McKee (Tessa) Sitts, Keelie Sitts, Michael Bahr, Kristen (John) Wall, Jessica Hurst, and Tara Hurst; and great-grandchildren Jordan and Josie Sitts, Owen Kester and Katie Wall.
A memorial service will be held on February 16, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. in the Chapel of Faith Presbyterian Church, 16000 North Del Webb Blvd., Sun City, AZ 85351-1699. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to his church.
