Hazel Alice Harris Kott, 100, passed away on May 3, 2012 at Royal Oaks Healthcare Center, Sun City, AZ.
Hazel was born on October 21, 1911 in Topeka, KS to George Walter and Effie Bell (Day) Harris. She moved to Chicago at the age of 13 with her grandmother, Alice (Culver) Day, and her aunt, Elsie Helen Day. She graduated from Ravenswood Elementary School, Lake View High School, Chicago Normal College, and the University of Illinois.
Hazel was united in marriage with John Henry Kott on August 27, 1934. They enjoyed more than 64 years together, living in Chicago, Park Ridge, and Sun City, AZ, where they moved in 1972. While in Chicago, Hazel taught kindergarten for many years in the Prescott and Henry Schools as well as Sunday school for fifteen years at the First Congregational Church of Ravenswood. She was president of the Trumbull School PTA where her daughters attended grade school. In Sun City, Hazel was an active member of The Church of the Palms, Sun City Chapter of the Retired Teachers Association, Palmbrook Country Club, Palmbrook's 9-Hole Golfers, and The Handbell Ringers of Sun City. She and John traveled all over the world.
Hazel enjoyed sewing, playing the piano, collecting Toby Jugs, reading, and playing bridge and Rummikub. She was well known at Royal Oaks for her love of exercise, participating in fitness classes even into her 100th year! Hazel was happy to celebrate her 100th birthday with most of her family in October 2011 at Palmbrook Country Club.
Mrs. Kott was preceded in death by her husband John, a former District 16 Superintendent of Chicago Public Schools, in 1998; grandsons Scott Johnson and Dan Johnson; son-in-law Dennis Krueger; brothers Glenn (Guida) McGee and Frank (Faye) Harris; and sisters Ella Mae (George) Zage and Maxine (Robert) Oliver.

Hazel is also survived by nieces, nephews, and many friends in Chicago and Sun City.
Hazel was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who happily watched many ball games and tennis matches that her "grands" participated in. She will be dearly missed.
