John T. Dancer, 85, Sun City West, AZ, passed away on Friday, August 30, 2013 at his home surrounded by his five children.
Born February 20, 1928, he was the son of Paul C. and Monabell (Proctor) Dancer of Stockbridge, Michigan. He spent his childhood summers at the family cottage in Pleasant Lake, Michigan. In his teens, he attended summer camp at Camp Charlevoix in Charlevoix, Michigan and Culver Military Academy in Culver, Indiana. John graduated high school from Kemper Military School, in Boonville, MO.
During World War II, he served in the Merchant Marines and later in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he worked as an airplane mechanic. When the war ended, he attended Michigan State University, where he met his wife, Peggy. After graduating MSU, he purchased and ran the Stockbridge Lumber Yard. He was also instrumental in starting Rural Telephone Company, the first telephone company in Stockbridge, MI. He began his banking career at Stockbridge State Bank (now known as SSBBank), where he worked for over 40 years. He served as President and Chairman of the Board and was an active board member until his death. John was also Chairman of the Board at the D & C Stores, with headquarters in Stockbridge. In Stockbridge he attended the First Presbyterian Church of Stockbridge. He was also a member of the Stockbridge Lions Club, Masonic Lodge and American Legion. He was a member of Desert Palms Presbyterian Church in Sun City West since 1985.
John loved to golf and ski and especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
On November 23, 1950, he married Margareta L. (Peggy) Miller who preceded him in death. Surviving are his children, Elizabeth Doty (Danny) Bloxom, Petoskey, MI; Sarah Coy Dancer-Lukey, Sun City West, AZ; Paul C. Dancer, San Francisco, CA; Amy L. (Shermon) Stanley, Stockbridge, MI and John Benjamin (Jeannie) Dancer, Eaton Rapids, MI, 8 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at Desert Palms Presbyterian Church in Sun City West, AZ on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at 10:00 A.M. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Stockbridge, MI on September 27, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers please make donations to 17225 N. Boswell Blvd., Sun City, AZ 85373.
