Alfred Werner Obituary
He is survived by Janet A. Werner, his wife for 71 years. He was born to Clyde and Grace Werner in Ilion, NY, and lived in Cincinnati, OH, and Rochester, NY, during elementary and high school.
He earned college and graduate degrees in physical education, including a B.S. and D.P.E at Springfield College in Massachusetts, where he was 1940 Class President, and an M.S. at Penn State. He played varsity football, basketball and track while in college, including playing in the Final Four in Indianapolis, IN, with his basketball team in 1940. He served as an officer in the Navy during World War II, teaching in the V-5 flight training programs in California and Florida.
Dr. Werner's career in athletics and physical education included teaching and coaching at Allegheny College in PA, Plattsburgh State College in NY, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY, where he rose to become the Associate Director of Physical Education, and finally the Director of Athletics and Professor of Physical Education at the State University of New York at Albany before his retirement in 1978.
He loved the lakes and mountains of the Adirondacks in New York where he enjoyed camping and canoeing with his family. He eventually built a home on Upper Saranac Lake in 1970 where he and Janet summered for over 40 years. They moved to Sun City, AZ, in 1997 to enjoy the warmer winters. He served his community in many ways, including as a Trustee for Springfield College and as President of the Upper Saranac Lake Association. His honors include the Tarbell Medallion, the highest award for alumni service to Springfield College.
He is also survived by his sister, Jean Darneal, of Tarpon Springs, FL; his son, Douglas Werner, of San Diego, CA; his daughter, Barbara Werner, of Nederland, CO; his grandchildren, Dr. Heidi Werner Horn, Dana Michener, and Heather Werner; and great grandchildren, Archer and Ella Horn.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 103rd Ave., Sun City on Friday, January 18th at 11:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Upper Saranac Lake Foundation, Box 564, Saranac Lake, NY 12983.
