Gordon Neil "Bart" Bartholomew died peacefully in his recliner on November 13, 2012. He was 82 years old. Gordon was born March 5, 1930 in Sayre, Pennsylvania to Terrell Bartholomew and Estella Layman Bartholomew. At age 7 he moved with his family to Alton, New York. He started college at Brockport State College. His college years were interrupted in August of 1950 when joined the Air Force. He spent 4 years in the Air Force during the Korean War with 2 and a half of those years in Japan. He returned to Brockport in 1954 and was a member of the 1955 Men's Co-National Championship Soccer Team, which was the first team inducted into Brockport College's Hall of Fame.
While in Japan, Gordon met Mary Ann Masschelin and they were married on August 25, 1956 in East Moline, Illinois where they spent the first 14 years of their marriage and where all 5 of their children were born. Gordon finished his college education and graduated from St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa with a degree in Business Administration. His professional career was spent in the insurance industry. The last 15 years before retirement was with Aetna. His outgoing personality and ability to engage anyone in a conversation served him well in his work and in life.
In 1970 he drove the Alaska Highway bringing his family of 7 to Anchorage, Alaska. Sports were always a very important part of Gordon's life. He was very involved in coaching his 4 sons' baseball teams and helped to keep many of their friends involved in sports. Gordon and his wife retired in 1993 and joined the "snow birds" spending winters in Sun City, AZ and summers in Anchorage. Knowing Gordon's love of golf Mary Ann took lessons and they both enjoyed years of playing golf. His last day of golf was the Friday before he passed away.
His oldest son, Thomas, both parents, and sisters Bette Gottorf and Rita Jenson, preceded Gordon in death. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, daughter Teri (Tim) Regan of Arizona, sons Bob (Kaye) of Juneau, AK, Ed of Lawrence, KS, Doug (Anna Mae) of Dillingham, AK, daughter-in-law Cheri of Anchorage, AK, 10 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews including Tobie Olsan in Rochester, New York, Judy (Michael) Verret of Sun City, AZ, Ken (Barb) Brooks and Jack Brooks of East Moline, IL.
A service to honor Gordon's life will be held on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Clement of Rome Parish – 15800 Del Webb Blvd., Sun City, AZ 85351. Donations can be made to Special Olympics at www.specialolympics.org
