Harold Shapiro, age 98, died peacefully on May 5th. The third of 5 children borne to Hymie and Bella Shapiro, Harold was raised in Hamilton, Ontario and Buffalo N.Y.
His career was spent as a chef, at one time owning the largest banquet facility in San Francisco, where he lived for over 40 years and where he married first, Ollie Pine of which their were 2 children, Janet and Deborah and following their divorce, Mildred DeVaux, who had 2 children, Robert and Linda. Nothing in Harold's life was more dear to him than this union.
In 1978 Harold and Millie settled into Sun City and participated appreciatively in the activities offered there. Harold's war time experiences influenced his lifetime fascination with human behavior, much of which he found as idiotic and foolish. As a lifelong champion of the working class he devoted aggressive energy towards convincing others of his convictions. Socialism, atheism, humanitarianism were concepts he enjoyed defending in debates.. Harold possessed a sharp wit, extraordinary memory and an acerbic tongue, endearing him to supporters, angering those who disagreed. In later years he wearied of this struggle and was happy to discharge these battles to others.
He leaves behind 4 children, 3 grandchildren and many loving nieces, nephews and friends who will miss his powerful earthly presence greatly.
A celebration of Harold's life will be held on Father's Day, June 16th, from noon to 4:00 P.M. at 9803 Redwood Dr., Sun City, AZ 85351.
