Robert Oman Obituary

Robert Andrew Oman, 89, entered eternity peacefully at his home in Sun City West, AZ at 9:30 P.M., Friday, May 22, 2015 following an extended illness.
Mr. Oman was born on September 25, 1925 in the former Belgian Congo in Africa to Christian missionaries Axel Andrew and Helen Violet Oman. There he lived for the next 12 years of his life along with his sister, Esther.
Bob attended Lakewood High School in Chicago, IL and went on to study at Northwestern University where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a minor in Economics. He also enlisted at the U.S. Naval Reserve Midshipmen's School in New York City and was appointed Lieutenant (Junior Grade) and served the United States Navy as a fire control officer on the USS New Jersey BB-62 battleship.
After serving honorably in the United States Navy, he secured a position with the City of Pasadena as an accountant until 1957, after which he took a position with the City of Costa Mesa and the Costa Mesa Sanitary District for the next 33 years. During this time, he pursued a graduate degree at California State University, Fullerton and earned a Masters degree in Public Administration in 1977. He retired in 1990 as the city's Director of Finance and Treasurer.
After retirement Bob continued to serve as a financial consultant for various cities such as West Hollywood, Moreno Valley, Chino and Orange. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Orange County Employees Retirement System from 1991 to 1995.
In 1950, Mr. Oman married Annie Collard. Together they had three sons, Robert Ezekiel, David Andrew, and Mark Everett, but in 1962 at the the age of ten their son David succumbed to complications resulting from childhood-onset diabetes. Sadly, in 1974 his wife Annie was diagnosed with cancer and passed away too soon at the age of 49, five years later.
Over the next year as one would expect, Bob grieved the loss of his wife Annie. However, God did not want him to be alone and blessed him again by bringing another woman into his life. On October 11, 1980, he married Gladys Olivia Blanton and resided in Costa Mesa, CA for 15 years before moving to their present home in Sun City West, AZ in 1995.
A man of unwavering integrity and a fount of wisdom, Mr. Oman was always brimming with pleasant cheerfulness. He endeared people with his sunny disposition and will always be remembered with great fondness by those who were familiar with him.
Most importantly, Mr. Oman was a godly man with a tremendous capacity for love; the greatest love of all being his steadfast faith and devotion to God which was evident to all who knew him. Throughout his time spent with Olivia here in Sun City West he counted himself a proud member of the Calvary Community Church in Phoenix.
Robert Andrew Oman is survived by his loving and devoted wife; two sons and their spouses; six grandchildren; great-grandchildren; a sister, Esther Oman Pereira; cousins: Ruth Halberg, Carol Mason, and Grace Ball; nieces and nephews.
A viewing and service will be held on May 28, 2015 at 4:00 P.M. at Camino del Sol in Sun City West, AZ and a second service and burial will be held at Pacific View Memorial Park in Corona Del Mar, CA on June 1, 2015 at noon.

We were saddened to receive the news of Bob's death. He and Olivia were wonderful helpers to my mom in her declining years. A great guy, full of interesting life stories, many of which will remain in our memories as time passes. Thank you to Olivia for her devoted love of Bob.

Lori and Ross.
