August H. (Gus) Klem was born in 1933 at Eureka, CA. The family moved to the Matanuska Valley, in Alaska, as replacement colonist in 1937. Started school at Wasilla, Alaska.

He graduated from high school at Palmer, AK. He obtained a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Washington. Served in the US Army. Worked for Kaiser Cement as manager of several Portland cement plants. Was a registered Professional Chemical Engineer in the states of California, Montana, and Texas. Became the general manager of quality control and process engineering for the corporation. Traveled the world looking for the best equipment for future plant expansions. Lived in Indonesia and spent time in Hong Kong, and Thailand.
Married to Betty Lou Klem. Together they have 4 daughters, 5 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.
