GLOUCESTER - Carlton B. Cowan, Lt. Col. (retired) USAF, passed away unexpectedly on June 27, 2012.
A highly decorated Vietnam era veteran, holder of the Bronze Star, Carl loved his country passionately and served honorably for 20 years, from Vietnam to Europe to Central America. An avid fly fisherman and hunter, he was happiest when discussing politics and philosophy, as well as art and literature. A lifelong Republican, he served as chairman of the Gloucester Republican Committee for the past two years.
He leaves behind his wife, Patricia; sons, Bruce and Dan; daughter, Adrienne; granddaughter, Heather; step-daughters, Carolyn Stanton and Cindy McGuire; and all of his wonderful friends and acquaintances.
A celebration of life service will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 2, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church, Gloucester, officiated by the Rev. Douglas Nagel.
In Carlton's memory, contributions may be given to the First Presbyterian Church Gloucester, P. O. Box 581, Gloucester, VA 23061; or Romney for President Victory Fund, P. O. Box 149756, Boston, MA 02114-9756.
Arrangements by Hogg Funeral Home and Crematory, Gloucester Point. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

It was a shock to find out about Carl's passing. We carpooled and worked together as Captains on the Air Staff and I always appreciated his knowledge, sense of humor and, most of all, his friendship. Years later we connected again when he was with AM General and I was again on the Air Staff; and, finally, I heard from him through the Department of State, after Carl contacted them concerned that I might have been in the bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad. That was Carl's hallmark - true to his friends regardless of time and distance; I miss him and sympathize deeply with your loss.

Carl...
You touched everyone you worked with. When things got too crazy here at work you were always the guy to go chat with and regroup.
You're in our thoughts and prayers

I was distraught to here about Mr. Cowan's passing. I was his nurse in the hospital a couple of weeks ago, and I have to say that he left quite an impact on all of us. He was such a great guy, and we were all very sad to here of his passing. Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family!!

Didn't expect to see this news about L/C Cowan (Carlton Blue) in the paper. He was one of my most favorite and memorable bosses--I was his secretary in 1981-82 when it was still Tactical Air Command. I particularly remember one time in our new office space we were working on assembling a huge, last minute project and I had my method and he had his--you guessed it, we used his method! He was nice about reminding me who was in charge, didn't read me the riot act in front of everyone like some might, just was quiet about it. Those were the days, we worked hard and still had fun times on the job. He set the standard for all my future bosses.
