Howard, Theresa B. - Newport News
NEWPORT NEWS - Theresa B. Howard passed peacefully into the arms of her Heavenly Father on Sunday, November 16, 2014, at the age of 94. There she will be welcomed by her beloved husband of 60 years, W.B. Howard, Jr.; her daughter, Adrienna H. Smith; her birth and adopted parents, all of her brothers and sisters, and a host of other family and friends. Theresa was born October 8, 1920 in Charleston, SC, the daughter of Albert C. Toomer, Sr. and Isabel Blyer of Savannah, GA. As a young child, she was adopted by Eli and Catherine Braxton Brown of Williamsburg, VA, where she spent her formative years. Theresa attended Virginia State College (now Virginia State University) in Petersburg, VA for two years. Her educational pursuits were curtailed when she met and married the "love of her life" in 1940. Their 60 year union produced three children, Theresa Moore Cox, the late Adrienna H. Smith, and W.B. "Bernie" Howard, III, and ended with the death of her husband in 2000. Theresa lived a life of quiet dignity, unassuming strength, and love for family. Never given to mindless pursuits, she shunned involvement in the latest trends, relying solely on her own personal style and preference. One of the first black female entrepreneurs, Theresa and her husband pioneered the first black beauty and barber supply which they managed successfully in downtown Newport News for several years. She was a faithful and devoted member of Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church and participated regularly in various facets of church life. She was widely praised and renowned for her calm and sweet demeanor as everyone who met her loved her and remembered her kindness and loving spirit. These qualities remained with her all her life and even in the midst of her suffering, she always expressed gratitude to all who provided care. She leaves to treasure her life a daughter, Theresa Cox of Newport News; son, W.B. "Bernie" Howard, III (Diane) of Newport News; four grandchildren, Dr. Erin H. Moore of Fairburn, OH, Kathryn Y. Moore of Newport News, D'Jaris R. Gladden of Washington, DC, and Malvin E. Moore (Manda) of Minneapolis, MN; and three great grandchildren, Dwayne B. Gladden of Hampton, VA, D'Juan R. Gladden of Washington, DC and Etta J. Moore of Minneapolis, MN. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, November 21, 2014 at the funeral home. A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 22, 2014 at Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church, 820-25th Street, Newport News. O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.

Hoyle, Nancy - Hampton
HAMPTON - Nancy Hoyle passed away peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 15. Nancy was born on September 19, 1933 in Fries, VA. Nancy had a successful career as a manager for Revco Drug Stores until her retirement in 1996. She was very passionate about her work and loved to help others. Throughout her career, she touched the lives of her customers and employees in many ways and was highly regarded by all. You couldn't go to Revco without saying hi to Nancy. Nancy was a renegade when it came to work life balance. Despite her successful career, she knew the importance of putting family first and always did just that. Nancy is survived by her devoted and loving husband, Gordon Hoyle, two daughters and son-in-laws, Carol and Ron Fama of Newport News, VA, Stacey and Andy Hammonds of Hampton, VA, and her son and daughter-in-law, John and Roxanne Karash of Maricopa, AZ. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Ben and Mackenzie Fama, Leah and Joey Karash and Cody Hammonds. She was completely unapologetic when it came to bragging about how smart and talented her beloved grandchildren were. Nancy adored her miniature Schnauzer, Riley. Alzheimer's Disease brings many symptoms, but Riley was always faithful and comforting to her during those times. He even got a special pass to visit her in her nursing home! Someone once said that when someone passes away not to say, "they are in a better place," but it's comforting for us to think that Nancy truly is. Where she is now, she has all of her wonderful memories, she is happy, she is independent and most importantly she has her dignity back. She was the best wife, mom, mother-in-law and Nanny ever. The family will have visitation on November 19, 2014 from 6-7:30 pm at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home in Hampton VA. The funeral will be private. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Alzheimer's Association Southeastern Chapter, 6350 Center Dr. Suite 102, Norfolk VA 23502. The family also wishes to thank the staff at Northampton Convalescent Center for their kindness and gentle care.
