Chawlk, Walter - Hampton  
HAMPTON - Mr. Walter "Billy" Chawlk slipped away from our earthly presence on July 23, 2015. He was born on May 15, 1936, in Salisbury, North Carolina, to the late Wilks and Laura Rice Chalk. He spent numerous years in the Central Children's Home in Oxford, NC and was educated in Oxford and Salisbury, NC. Walter served his country honorably in the U.S. Army. He was employed by the Newport News Shipbuilding and retired after 36 years of service as a Foreman in the X36 Dept. He was a dedicated and faithful member of Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church in Newport News, VA and served as a sexton. He served as a devoted member of the Alumni Association and a member of the Board of Director's of the Central Children's Home. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and six sisters. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elva Chawlk, his children: Marilyn Patton (Iziah), Walter B. Chawlk of Hampton, VA, Michael Chawlk (Kadetra), Ypsilanti, MI, and Michelle Howard (Roy), Bowie, MD; grandchildren: April Howard, Kari Patton-Rankin (Sean), Dominique Chawlk, Akayla Cooper, and Xavier Cooper; great-grandchildren: Michael Howard and Kadence Rankin. He is also survived by his siblings Melvin "Pete" Chalk, Annie Ruth Key and Kay Frances Ferrens of Salisbury, NC and a host of nieces and newphews. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made in memory of Walter Chawlk, to the Central Children's Home, 211 West Antioch Drive, Oxford, NC 27565. Viewing will be held noon to 6 p.m. Thursday, July 30, at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel and 2 hours prior to the service. The Celebration of Life will be held Friday, July 31, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church, 830 25th Street, Newport News, VA 23607. Interment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens.

NEWPORT NEWS - Marga M. Jester passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 21, 2015, at 8:30 AM at Commonwealth Assisted Living in Hampton, VA. She is survived by her devoted husband, SSG James H. Jester, son, Scott C. Jester, step-daughter, Maryland A. Noel, two brothers from Germany, Otto Korn and Eddie Korn, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of German friends. Services for Marga will be held at Carter Funeral Home, Denbigh Chapel at 251 Richneck Rd., Newport News, VA on Wednesday, July 29, 2015 from 7-8 PM. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 30, 2015 at 11:00 AM at the funeral home.

Knapp, June McGuriman - Newport News  
NEWPORT NEWS - June McGuriman Knapp, 78, went to her heavenly home on July 25, 2015. She was born in Bacon's Castle, Virginia on December 14, 1936, to the late William E. and Donnie Ellis McGuriman. June graduated from Surry High School and retired as a research librarian from the City of Newport News Public Library System, a job that she loved. She was a Christian and had attended both Bacon's Castle and Mill Swamp Baptist Churches. In her retirement, she enjoyed reading, crocheting and knitting. In addition to her parents, June is also predeceased by her husband, Edward F. Knapp, Sr. and a sister, Rose McGuriman Wyatt. She is survived by her sons, Edward F. Knapp, Jr of Norfolk, John I Knapp (Lauretta) of Smithfield, her daughters, Donna R Knapp of League City, Texas and Barbara A Knapp of Newport News, her sister, Dianna McGuriman Keen ("Junior"), two grandsons, Johnnie Knapp and Connor Knapp Carr, and her granddaughter, Jennie Knapp, as well as her feline fur-baby, BJ. June's family and friends are invited to a celebration of her life on Wednesday, July 29th, 2015, from 4-7 pm at the home of Dianna and Junior Keen, 120 Commodore Lane in Smithfield. Kohls, Ellen P. - Portsmouth  
PORTSMOUTH - ELLEN DIANE PARDUE KOHLS, of Portsmouth, Virginia. (May 8, 1945 - July 23, 2015.) Ellen was predeceased by her parents, U.S. Army Colonel Wallace D. Pardue (ret.) and B. Lois Pardue. Ellen is survived by brother W. Davidson Pardue (Suzanne Pardue), sister Deborah C. Usry (Durwood Usry), daughter Dianne M. Blanning (Trevor Blanning), son J. Michael Frangiskakis (Susan Frangiskakis), grandchildren Hannah, Carter, Allie and Zach, nieces and nephews, a host of devoted friends and her treasured Westies, Buddy and Candy. Ellen was an avid reader, an exceptional gardener, and a lover of art and music. After fully retiring Ellen was active in several arts and history organizations enjoying lectures and field trips, and always attracting new friends. She looked for opportunities to get to know the local area and took great pleasure in exploring the Eastern Shore, the Outer Banks, historic homes and experiencing local cuisine. All are welcome to join the family in celebrating Ellen's life on August 14, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth. Memorial gifts may be donated to the Portsmouth Humane Society.

Long, Donald J. - Carrollton  
CARROLLTON - Donald J. Long passed away at the Newport Rehabilitation Center on Saturday, July 25, 2015. He was born in Rocky Mount, N.C. and resided in Newport News, Va. most of his life. He retired from Newport News Shipbuilding after 40 years in the Quality Control Department. Donald attended Carrollton Baptist Church. He graduated from Newport News High School in 1952 and was co-captain of the track team. Donald loved gardening, golf and animals of all kind. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Jimmie and Daisy Long, sister, Louise L. Hulcher and brother, Jimmie Long, Jr. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Suzanne Roberts Long; sister, Betty L. Dunn (Slade) of Gloucester; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Long and Betsy R. Moore (Sam); and many special nieces and nephews that he loved. He also leaves behind two special cats, Boots and Little Bit. The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 30 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow the visitation at 2 p.m. with entombment at Peninsula Memorial Park Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Carrollton Baptist Church, P.O. Box 267, Carrollton, VA 23314 or the local Cancer Society.

Maden, Leslie - Hampton  
HAMPTON - Leslie Maden, 87, passed away suddenly on July 20, 2015. A loving and devoted husband, father, brother and Papa, surrogate father and great friend, he served in the United States Air Force for 20 years, retiring in 1966 after a 20 year career. He then served 20 more years in the aviation division at Ft Eustis, retiring from federal service in 1987. He was a true patriot. Leslie touched so many lives and had what his grandson, Ethan, called the "Loving Les Touch". He was thoughtful and inspiring and made it a daily part of his life to give to others as further demonstrated by his involvement with the Knights of Columbus. He loved to play golf and hang around The Woodlands Golf Course with his buddies, eat breakfast and laugh. Les had a way with people, they gravitated towards him and he had a positive impact on everyone with whom he came in touch. Preceded in death by his parents, Charles Leslie Maden and Georgianna Maden, his beloved sister, Marge LaFlamme, his wife of 54 years, Carol Maden and his best friend Fred Chamberlain; Leslie (Daddy) is survived by his daughters; Debra Paulus (Jim), Doreen Watt (Lisa), Doris Latinsky (Eric) and his son Charlie Maden; sister-in-law Liz Thayer (Gene); niece Naomi Drumwright (Kent), his nephew Wayne LaFlamme and Shirley Schaefer. He has a huge extended family to include his grandchildren; Eddie Ramey, Gary Manning (Carrie), Lesley Ramey-Kerins (Chris), Andrew Latinsky, Natasha Paulus, Ethan Latinsky, Cyrus Maden, Tibor Maden and Cory Lambing; and his great grandchildren; Alura Manning and Brandon Kerins. There are so many that were so special in Les' life and were always there for him and for that we cherish each and every one of you. His kind spirit lives in us all and our wish is to be able to continue spreading the best of him. A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, August 6th, 2015 at R Hayden Smith Funeral Home followed by a reception at The Woodlands Golf Course at noon and a special round of golf. The family prefers donations be made to the Knights of Columbus Council, 511 c/o St. Joseph Catholic Church, 512 Buckroe Avenue, Hampton VA 23664 in lieu of flowers.
