HAMPTON - Derwin Lathor Tucker transitioned peacefully in his sleep to glory on January 8, 2014 at the age of 57. Born June 20, 1956 in Greenville, NC. Derwin received his education in Hampton public schools and graduated from Bethel High School 1975. He was a member of the Bethel High School team that won the 1974 Virginia State High School AAA Championship. Derwin received a scholarship with the University of Illinois
and had a distinguished football career with the Fighting Illini from 1975-79. He was a 4th round draft pick for the Los Angeles Rams in 1979. He received his B.A. degree from Northeastern Illinois University in 1985. He then moved to Atlanta, Georgia and had a distinguished career becoming a top telecommunication's sales manager with Sprint. He leaves to cherish his precious memories: two children whom he loved unconditionally, his son Jordan L. Tucker and his daughter Kamryn D. Tucker (Roswell, GA); his parents William A. Tucker and Helen Hemby Tucker (Hampton, VA); three sisters Demetria Tucker (Hampton, VA); Cynthia Tucker (Stone Mountain, GA); Marcia (Joseph)Tucker Johnson (Myrtle Beach, SC); one brother Shelton R. Tucker (Hampton, VA); niece Jasminn L. Johnson; two nephews Brandon R. Tucker and Joseph Johnson III; uncles Willie (Joann) J. Tucker(Columbus, OH); Carlton(Jackie) B. Tucker (Tacoma, WA); aunt Ann Louise (Ben) Corbitt and a host of cousins and friends. We deeply and humbly appreciate his former teammate and close friend Bruce Elliott and family. The visitation will be at Cooke Bros Funeral Chapel on Friday, January 17 from 6-7 pm. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, January 18 with viewing from 10-11 am and services beginning at 11:00 am at Ivy Baptist Church. Entombment will follow in Hampton Veteran's Memorial Gardens.
