NEWPORT NEWS - Edwin Y. Hoffman, 84; beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away in the presence of his loving family on Saturday, March 29, 2014. Born on October 16, 1929, Ed was a native of Virginia and lived in the DC area for over 40 years, where he served as a Computer Specialist for the Department of Defense. Following his retirement after 35 years of civil service, Ed and his family moved to Newport News in 2002. Ed received a BS in Mathematics and Physics from Erskine College and was a Korean War
veteran who proudly served in the US Navy
as a Hospital Corpsman. He was a talented fine artist, poet and avid piano player with an immense love for classical music, and a long time member of the First United Methodist Church in Hilton Village, where he spent many years singing with the Chancel choir. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 33 years, Nannette S. Hoffman, and is survived by one daughter, Mirella Savage and husband, Daniel of Newport News, two grandchildren, Marcus and Amelia; one stepson, Graham Schweig, Ph.D. of Newport News, one brother, Harmon Hoffman, Jr. and wife, Mary of Williamsburg, four nephews, John, Alan, Robert and Les, one sister, Sue Nelson of Charlotte, NC and her children. A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 5 at 3PM. Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
