SANTA ANA, CA - Ernest Gray Edwards, M.D. of Santa Ana, CA passed away peacefully at his home on March 2, 2014 at the age of 86. He was born to Flora Lee Gray and Clifford Ernest Edwards in Gloucester, VA. His family moved to Newport News where he attended school and graduated from the Newport News High School in 1945. Gray remained in the area through graduation from The College of William and Mary and the Medical College of Virginia where he received his Medical Doctorate. After medical school he enlisted in the U.S. Navy
, serving as an Officer in the Medical Corps during the Korean War
era. He was stationed in both San Francisco and Guam and spoke fondly and with pride of his time in the service. After his service, he returned to the Medical College of Virginia, finish his specialty in Pathology, and there he met and married Consuelo Mercé. Together they moved to California where he practiced Pathology at hospitals and laboratories throughout the state, most notably as Chief of Pathology of the Santa Ana Tustin Community Hospital from 1969 to 1980. An accomplished artist, Gray developed his skills as an illustrator, sculptor, and most notably as a painter throughout his life. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Consuelo Mercé Edwards, their children Teresa Edwards-Shook and her husband Stanley, James Edwards and his wife, Rosalind Wiseman-Edwards, two grandchildren Elijah and Roane Edwards, his brother Fred G. Edwards of Deltaville, VA, his sister Betty E. Hamilton of Urbanna, VA and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and colleagues. Funeral services were held at Fairhaven Memorial Park, Santa Ana, CA on March 9th.
