Everette Eldridge Martin

NEWPORT NEWS - After a courageous battle with lung cancer, Everette Eldridge Martin, 81, passed away December 7, 2013, at home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Martinsville, Virginia, E.E. was a Peninsula resident for 71 years. After attending Warwick High School, E.E. joined the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and in 1954 he married the love of his life, Gaynelle Conway. He retired in 1993 as a Senior Quality Analyst after 36 years with Newport News Shipbuilding. He was a member of Warwick Moose Lodge 1711 and served as Governor from 1995-1996. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Newport News. E.E. was preceded in death by his parents, Reynolds and Edna Martin and infant granddaughter, Dawn Marie Martin. Survivors include his devoted wife and best friend of 59 years, Gaye, daughter Bonnie (Mark), sons Bobby (Sharon) and Jerry. Also surviving are sister Mary Fox and special aunt, Eva Mashburn. E.E.'s pride and joy was his grandchildren Erin (Brad), Jason, Ian (Melinda), Jamie, Jared (Nancy), Mary Beth and Daniel. Great grandchildren Alexa, Alana, Aidan, Katelynn and Austin love and will miss their Papa more than words can say. Recent additions to the family include grandchildren, Jonathan (Stacy), Greg, Mark, and Kathryn. He was looking forward to the arrival of great-grandson Liam in January 2014. The family will receive friends beginning 5 p.m. Thursday, December 12th at Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 6 p.m. officiated by Rev. Dale Seley. The family wishes to extend gratitude to Doctors K. Putland, S. Hancock, J. Mattern and T. Duggan for their wonderful care of our husband and father. A very special thank you to Riverside Hospice, especially our "angel" Kasey for her loving care and support of our Hero!
