NEWPORT NEWS - Gerald Eugene Kightlinger, 85, devoted husband, father, son, and brother went to be with God on Tuesday, August 26, 2014. He was born on July 28, 1929, in Sugarcreek, Pennsylvania, and was a graduate of Rocky Grove High School. He lived in Rocky Grove until he entered the Army
in 1949 to serve the country and see the world. In Germany, he met and married his beloved wife, Margret. A Vietnam veteran, he retired as a master sergeant in 1970 after more than 21 years of service. He retired again as postmaster of Savage, Maryland, in 1990 after a 20-year career with the U.S. Postal Service. He loved traveling with his wife and family, and was particularly proud of his military service and two daughters. He and his family lived in Severn, Maryland, for more than 30 years, where he was a long-time member of the Elks Lodge
. Later he moved to Williamsburg, Virginia, and then to the Warwick Forest Retirement Community in Newport News. Mr. Kightlinger was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth (Burchfield) Kightlinger; his father, Virgil Kightlinger; two brothers, Jack Kightlinger and Gary Kightlinger; and a sister, Nola Jean McGill. Mr. Kightlinger is survived by his wife of more than 60 years, Margret Kightlinger of Newport News; daughter, Gloria Womble and husband, Frank, of Suffolk, VA; daughter, Diana DeCouteau and husband, Duane, of Missoula, MT; two brothers, Donald Kightlinger and Richard Kightlinger; two sisters, Beverly Rapp and Sandra Reyburn; and many nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service will be held at Yorkminster Presbyterian Church, 6218 George Washington Memorial Highway, Yorktown at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 2, 2014, with Senior Pastor Mark Jernigan and Rev. Mr. Joseph Riss officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Arlington National Cemetery in early 2015. The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions be made to the
