Herbert James "Herb" Smith

SMITHFIELD - Herbert James "Herb" Smith, 82, loving husband, father, and grandfather, of Smithfield was called home on December 28, 2013. Herb was born in Mount Airy, North Carolina and moved to the peninsula in 1953. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army. He is survived by his wife, Lori; daughters, Cindy Sapienzo and Sherry Stokes (John); four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and brothers, Clarence, Bobby and Clay. Herb was preceded in death by his parents, Neil and Vestis Smith; a newborn son; two brothers; and a sister. Herb retired from Newport News Shipbuilding after 41 years, where he was a QID Supervisor. After his retirement, he worked for Enterprise Rental Car and was still employed with them upon his demise. He was a musician at heart, and founded The Memphis Edition band where he played bass and sang. Herb loved his family and had a great passion for music and old trucks. A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, January 2, 2013 at the Warwick Moose Lodge, 1711 Warwick Moose Lane, Newport News at 6:30 - 9:00 PM.
