James Roden Anthony

NEWPORT NEWS - The Lord called and welcomed one of His children, James Roden Anthony, home to eternal life on Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at the Sentara Nursing Center, Hampton, Va. James was born in Scotland Neck, N.C., on July 27, 1934, to the late Roden and Mary Jane Dickens Anthony. He attended public schools in Halifax County, N.C., and retired on disability from the Newport News Shipyard as a shipfitter. Brother Anthony was a devoted Deacon, senior usher board president and senior choir member of Galilee Baptist Church. His community involvement included membership with the Tidewater Usher Board Conference and the Retirement Men's Club. He was dutiful to all these things until his health failed him. He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife of 27 years, Mary J. Anthony; seven daughters, Geneva Carter (Howard), Mary Hackney (William), Ethel Walters, Denise Roberson (Kevin), Terrianne Hyman (Rayfield), Sandra Pitts and Barbara Anthony (Gabriel); seven sons, Marcus Anthony, Kelvin Pitts (Portia), Reginald, Tommy, James, Howard Pitts (Bertha) and Woodall Savage (Verna); two brothers, Richard (Zula) and Robert (Catherine); six sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; 32 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; along with a host of other relatives and friends. A funeral service will be held noon Saturday, June 19, at Galilee Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Viewing will be from 1 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home and two hours prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Arrangements are entrusted to O.H. Smith & Son Funeral Home.
