Dr. Jessie Lemon BrownNewport News - Dr. Jessie Lemon Brown transitioned peacefully to eternal rest December 28, 2012 at her home in Newport News, VA after an extensive illness.Jessie L Brown was born May 15, 1911 the older of two children in Columbia, SC. She later became a graduate of Hampton Institute, now Hampton University, where she taught English. Dr Jessie Brown earned her Ph. D. in Education at New York University. Hampton University and the state of Virginia awarded to her many honors and appointments: professor emeritus; Director of the Communications Center of Hampton University; Old Dominion Chair professor of the humanities; and Chairman of the Virginia Commission for the Arts. Dr Brown retired from Hampton University in1976.She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William C. Brown and her beloved sister, Mrs. Geranium Gibson. She leaves her sister's daughter, Norma Cranshaw (John) of Sacramento, CA to cherish her memory and a host of family and friends. The family gratefully acknowledges the excellent care given by: Martha Pegram, Marian Smith, Tequilla Williams, Dorothy Futrell, Carrie Guinn, and the late Mrs. Ruth Thornton.
