NEWPORT NEWS - John J. Berryman, III, age 80, passed away on Feb. 13, 2013. He was born in Newport News to the late John J. Berryman, Jr. and Marion Spencer Berryman, and had been a lifelong resident. He served in the Army
National Guard during the Korean War
and was stationed at the Pentagon. John had worked for Sturgis Newport Business Forms, Newport News Fire Dept., and had been in the Printing business with his father. He retired after 20 years from Dominion Virginia Power. John was a member of the Lion's Club and had served as President for Youth Exchange Program of Suffolk. He was given a Melvin Jones Fellowship Award from the Suffolk Lion's Club, of which he was a member. He was also a member of The Son's of the Confederate and Son's of American Revolution. He was preceded in death by his step-son, Kevin P. Riley and parents, John J. Jr., and Marion Berryman. Survived by his wife of 38 years, Gertrude A. Berryman; his son, John Jay Berryman IV (Nancy); his sister, Nancy Blaylock (Grady); brother, T. Floyd Berryman (Imogene); his step children, Catherine Blythe, Mike Riley, Jim Riley, Regina Farmer, Beth Simpson, Teresa Simon, Ann Hale, Loretta Barlow, and A.J. Riley; 26 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; and one great great grandson. He was loved and will be greatly missed. The family will receive friends on Fri., Feb. 15 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Sat., Feb. 16, at Christ United Methodist Church, by Pastor Tom Tipton.
