John W. Ames Jr.

NEWPORT NEWS - Dr. John W. Ames, Jr., age 87, died peacefully at his home in Newport News on Friday March 7, 2014. He was born in Wachapreague, VA the son of the late John W. Ames and Dorothy Fosque Ames. He graduated from Onancock High School, University of Virginia and the Medical College of Virginia where he earned his degree in dentistry. After serving proudly in World War II and the Korean War he resigned his military service as 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army and began his career as a dentist in Newport News where he practiced for over 40 years. Because of his strong sense of service and community, he was a member of the Girls Club, Toastmasters, Virginia Dental Society and a charter member of the Peninsula Kiwanis Club. As a long time member of Denbigh United Presbyterian Church he served as Deacon, Elder and Sunday school teacher. He is survived by his loving wife, Genevieve C. Ames of Newport News, his three children, Debbie Ames, Connie Ames Hunt and John Ames, III. A visitation will be held at Peninsula Funeral Home in Newport News from 5:00pm-7:00pm Monday March 10, 2014. After a private graveside service at Peninsula Memorial Park, a Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 pm, Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at Denbigh United Presbyterian Church (formerly Denbigh Presbyterian Church) with a reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Denbigh United Presbyterian Church.
